Students Rarely Used an AI Tutor, Despite Easy Access
EdSurge

EDITOR BRIEF
A two-year study in 18 Tennessee middle schools found that although 96% of students tried Khanmigo, the median student used it on only a third of the days it was available. Students made modest math gains, similar to Khan Academy practice without AI, and their tutor conversations rarely focused on math. Khan Academy says it is working to weave the tutor into learning activities and make it harder to avoid challenging work.
INSIGHTS
Access to an AI tool alone may not motivate learners to use it well. When designing a coding practice session, try having an AI tutor ask guiding questions instead of giving answers outright.
